News Article about us in the Te Awamutu Courier

26.01.10

Cathy Asplin wrote a very nice article for the Te Awamutu Courier which you can find below:

"Murray and Hilda Green grew sunflowers in the garden last year and enjoyed them so much they decided to go one step further and plant them on their farm.
So they organized sunflowers to be planted around their maize crop this year and are delighted with the results. ‘‘John Austin driver Jason Anderson was planting our maize in October so we got him to put sunflowers seeds in the outside bins. The 5kg of ‘Hysun’seeds from RD1 was enough to do three rows on the edge of the field.

‘‘We weren’t sure what they would be like, but with a bit of fertiliser and good weather conditions they have done exceptionally well. There’s some ‘whoppers’ amongst them.’’ The flowerhead seeds are edible once dried, so they plan to try a few on their salads eventually. The couple also hope to repeat the planting process next year, after the success of this year’s crop. While the flowers are only expected to last about ten days, they do make a stunning display ‘enmasse’ as they turn their ‘faces‘ to the sun. Motorists have been stopping on Mill Road (off JaryRoad) to admire the sunflowers, while interested people from the industry had a closer inspection last week."
